Late Chief Joshua I. Arikekpar was a distinguished educator, pioneering medical laboratory scientist, accomplished entrepreneur, and revered community leader whose life was defined by service, integrity, and uncommon generosity. A founding father of Bayelsa State and a man of deep compassion, he left an indelible legacy in healthcare, community development, and human empowerment.

Early Life and Background

Chief Joshua Arikekpar was born on November 15, 1925, in Otakeme, Ogbia Local Government Area of present-day Bayelsa State, to Olu Arikekpar and Etutu Arikekpar.

He was one of seven children, growing up alongside two brothers and four sisters in a modest but disciplined household.

At a time when access to education was limited, Otakeme was fortunate to have a primary school, where young Joshua began his early education. Upon completing Standard IV, he proceeded to Oloibiri to finish his primary schooling.

His formative years were shaped by two iconic educators—Late Headmaster Adaka Boro and Rev. Amangala—whose influence instilled in him a lifelong commitment to knowledge, discipline, and service.

Education and Early Career

Driven by academic promise, he gained admission into the prestigious Okrika Grammar School, where he completed his studies in 1946.

Inspired by his mentors, he began his career as a teacher, serving in:

  • Yenagoa Primary School
  • Otuogidi Primary School (1947)
  • St. Stephen’s Primary School, Amassoma
  • Schools in Oguta and Umualu

His passion for education and discipline impacted many young lives across these communities.

Transition to Public Service and International Training

Seeking broader opportunities, he relocated to Enugu, where he joined the Fisheries Department of the former Eastern Region of Nigeria.

His excellence earned him a scholarship to the United Kingdom, where he initially studied Fisheries. However, due to challenges encountered during practical training, he redirected his path to Medical Laboratory Science—a decision that would define his professional legacy.

In the UK, he distinguished himself by becoming a Fellow of the Institute of Medical Laboratory Technology (FIMLT/FIMLS) and specialized in Chemical Pathology and Exfoliative Cytology (Cyto-tech certification).

He spent 17 years abroad, gaining vast knowledge, experience, and professional exposure.

Return to Nigeria and Professional Excellence

Upon his return to Nigeria, Chief Arikekpar joined the General Hospital, Port Harcourt, serving in the Chemical Pathology Department.

In 1975, driven by entrepreneurial vision, he resigned to establish Arico Medical Diagnostic Laboratory at 41 Oromenike (Emekuku) Street, D/Line, Port Harcourt—one of the pioneering private laboratories in Rivers State.

Arico Medical Laboratory quickly became a household name, known for:

  • High-quality diagnostic services
  • Modern laboratory equipment
  • Professional excellence and accuracy
  • A serene and well-structured environment

He was a stickler for quality control, famously rejecting substandard equipment—even testing supplies personally to ensure accuracy.

His laboratory became a training ground for countless students and professionals, while also maintaining strong partnerships with hospitals, clinics, and corporate organizations.

Beyond professional practice, he played a critical role in socio-political development as:
