Patriarch • Banker • Teacher • Faithful Servant of God

A Patriarch of Purpose

On January 1, 1931, in the ancient town of Eneka, Rivers State, a child was born whose life would illuminate generations. Samuel Azuta Mbata, fondly called Sam, was the second of five children of Pa Gabriel Mbata and Mama Hannah Mbata. His birth was not recorded in colonial registers but preserved in oral tradition—woven into the stories of farms, rivers, and firesides. Later, he embraced January 1st as his birthday, a fitting symbol of new beginnings for a man destined to inspire renewal in others.

Early Years and Education (1930s–1950s)

Sam’s journey began at Eneka Infant School, where his mother gave him the Christian name Samuel, inspired by the prophet. His brilliance shone early—leading the school choir, excelling in sports, and displaying a natural charisma.

In 1945, he gained admission to Enitona High School, Port Harcourt, one of Nigeria’s elite institutions. By 1950, he graduated with the Cambridge School Certificate, and was invited to remain as a teacher. For three years, he mentored future leaders, laying the foundation for his lifelong devotion to education and service.

Building Through Industry and Service (1953–1970s)

In 1953, Sam joined the Bank of British West Africa (BBWA), now First Bank of Nigeria Plc, where his professionalism distinguished him. During this period, he met Appolonia, the love of his life. Their marriage blossomed into a union of faith and purpose, blessed with eight children.

After a brief stint at Shell Petroleum, Sam ventured into entrepreneurship following the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970). In 1970, he founded his own business, but his leadership qualities soon drew the attention of the Rivers State Government, which appointed him to key positions:

  • Chairman, Governing Council, Rivers State College of Science and Technology
  • Chairman, Rivers State Judicial Commission

These roles were not mere titles—they were affirmations of his integrity and wisdom, trusted across tribes and faiths.

Faith That Transformed a Nation (1955–2000s)

In 1955, a chance encounter with a beggar led Sam to Christ. He joined the Assemblies of God Church, and later became a towering figure in the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International (FGBMFI). Within two years, he rose from Chapter President to National President, and eventually International Vice President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees (Nigeria).

His charisma and humility turned FGBMFI into a household name across Nigeria and Africa. To many, he was the father of FGBMFI Nigeria. In his later years, he worshipped with the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and maintained close friendship with Pastor E.A. Adeboye.

A Heart That Gave Without Limits

Sam’s generosity was legendary. He supported thousands of widows, funded the education of countless orphans, and invested in community development in Eneka and beyond. His Royal Majesty, Professor Roland Woko, the traditional ruler of Eneka, once declared:

“Mbata is a man that any community would pray to have. Any community that has an Mbata has somebody.”
