Geographer, IYC Forerunner with Oronto Douglas, Commissioner under Alamieyeseigha & Jonathan, Died in Active Service

Late Nelson Azibaolanari was born on the 28th of January, 1970, in Otuedu, Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. A proud son of the soil, he carried the values of his people — diligence, scholarship, and service — to his last breath.

EDUCATION (1982-1997)

FSLC, State School Otuedu Ogbia (1982); SSCE, Government Secondary School Anyama Ogbia (1987); B.Sc. (Hons) Geography, University of Port Harcourt (1994); M.Sc. Environmental Geography (Biogeography), University of Ibadan (1997). Thesis: _“Vegetation Degradation Around Gas Flares in the Niger Delta.”

THE IYC FORERUNNER WITH ORONTO DOUGLAS

He was a significant forerunner of the *Ijaw Youth Congress (IYC) alongside late Barr. Oronto Douglas. In the 1990s, when the Ijaw nation was finding its voice, he and Oronto rooted the Ijaw cause in Ogbia and beyond – mobilizing youths, documenting gas flares, and framing the intellectual case for resource control and environmental justice. His work _“A Framework for Addressing Environmental and Social Injustices in the Niger Delta”_ was forged in those trenches.

Sadly, while Oronto Douglas is globally venerated, Nelson remains one of the un-venerated heroes of the Ijaw nation.

THE STATESMAN: TRUSTED BY ALAMIEYESEIGHA & JONATHAN (2001-2006)

His brilliance earned him uncommon trust:

Appointed by Chief DSP Alamieyeseigha, first Executive Governor of Bayelsa State (1999-2005) as:

  • Commissioner for Information and Culture (2001–2002)
  • Commissioner for Environment (2002–2003)

Retained by Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, Governor of Bayelsa State (2005-2007) as:

  • Commissioner for Special Duties, Bayelsa East Senatorial District (2003–2006)
  • Member, Project Monitoring and Implementation Committee (2003–2006)

THE TEACHER & SCHOLAR

Master Grade II, Rivers P.P.S.B (1995) & Bayelsa P.P.S.B (1996); Assistant Lecturer & Lecturer II, Geography & Environmental Management, UNIPORT (1998-2001). Author, member of Nigerian Geographical Association, Environment & Behaviour Association, Nigerian Environmental Society.

FAMILY

Married to Dr. (Mrs.) Love Eluan Nelson (nee Abali), daughter of Otakeme Community, Ogbia LGA – an accomplished academician and Pastor in the Pentecostal faith of the Niger Delta. Their union is blessed with children.

HEROIC DEMISE: 2006 – DIED IN ACTIVE SERVICE

In 2006, while on an official assignment for Bayelsa State Government, Late Nelson Azibaolanari died in a ghastly motor accident. He died in the line of duty, serving the state he loved.

He did not die in retirement. He died working for Bayelsa East, for Ogbia, for the Ijaw nation. A true martyr of public service.

Though his physical date of exit was tragic, his legacy lives on in the IYC youths he mentored, the students he taught, the policies he shaped, and the family he left behind.

He was a scholar, a forerunner, a commissioner, a husband, a father, and a patriot who died in service. May the Ijaw nation now venerate its son.
