Origins and Family Heritage

On July 31, 1944, in the historic town of Buguma, Asari‑Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria, a child was born whose life would become a testament to resilience and grace. Michael Godsnear Young‑Harry was the first son of Elder Godsnear Young‑Harry and Princess Dinah Godsnear Young‑Harry. He was one among seven children—six sons and one daughter.

His father, Elder Godsnear, was a man of intellect and integrity, a distinguished member of the Amakiri family of Idoniboye‑Obu group of houses, whose reputation for decency and wisdom shaped Michael’s moral compass. His mother, Princess Dinah, descended from the Chief Benibo (Egile) Amachree Royal Family House of Buguma and the Adde War Canoe House, Suku Polo Ogura‑ma (Old Bakana). Her warmth and beauty were legendary, and her nurturing spirit became the foundation of Michael’s compassion.

Education and Early Challenges (1956–1966)

Michael began his education at Baptist School Buguma between 1956 and 1962, showing early promise and determination. But tragedy struck on January 23, 1966, when his father passed away suddenly. At just twenty‑one, Michael was thrust into adulthood, becoming the caretaker of his family.

He moved to Port Harcourt to live with his uncle, Chief A.S. Young‑Harry, and enrolled at Kings College of Commerce (KCC), where he studied Bookkeeping and Secretarial Studies. His diligence earned him commendable grades and a recommendation from Justice Nabo Graham Douglas, which secured him employment at John Holt Trading Company in Onitsha.

Surviving the Civil War (1967–1970)

When the Nigerian Civil War erupted, Michael’s life took a perilous turn. He fled Onitsha on a bicycle, journeying through Aba to safety. Despite pressure to join the military, he refused, guided by his peaceful nature and faith.

After the war, with the economy in ruins, he began a small timber‑supply business in Port Harcourt, delivering firewood to homes and businesses. His resilience during those years reflected his belief that dignity lay in honest labor.

Career and Enterprise (1970s–2000s)

As Nigeria rebuilt, Michael’s career flourished. He joined ANANSA Shipping Ltd, then IDC (International Dredging Company), where his reliability earned him recognition. His expertise led him to work with multinational firms such as Adrian Volka (Dutch Firm) and HAM DREDGING, contributing to major maritime projects.

In the late 1970s, he joined a consortium of international companies contracted by the Nigerian government to construct the Finima settlement in Bonny Town—a landmark project in the Niger Delta.

With decades of experience behind him, Michael founded MIC Harry & Co., an engineering and construction firm that became a symbol of excellence. His reputation for integrity and precision made him a trusted name in the industry until his passing.

Family and Personal Life (1969–2010)

In March 1969, Michael married Mrs. Ibim Michael Young‑Harry, from Young‑Amey Polo, Buguma. Their union was one of devotion and partnership. Together they raised thirteen children, and their home became a sanctuary for extended family and friends.

Known affectionately as Big Daddy, Michael was a father not only to his own children but to many others who found guidance and support under his roof. His generosity and humility made him a pillar of his community.

Community Leadership and Influence

Michael was a natural leader and peacemaker. His wisdom and fairness made him the go‑to figure for resolving disputes. Many believed he deserved a Justice of Peace title for his lifelong commitment to harmony.

Faith and Final Days (2010)

On Sunday, July 18, 2010, he returned home from Port Harcourt, healthy and joyful. But by the morning of July 19, 2010, he had quietly departed this world. His passing was sudden and heartbreaking, yet his family found solace in the grace with which he lived.
