Early Life and Birth

Mandel Miene Charles Igbodo, fondly called MMC, was born on 22 April 1939 in Twon Brass, Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, into the Christian family of Mr. Charles Faghawari Igbodo and Madam Emily Ekitonmokuma Spiff of Ada‑Ama. His upbringing was deeply rooted in faith, discipline, and education.

Education

  • Attended several Anglican schools across the Niger Delta due to his father’s postings as a United Africa Company (UAC) agent.
  • Completed primary education at St. Barnabas’ School, Twon Brass.
  • Proceeded to Priscilla Memorial Grammar School (PMGS), Oguta, Eastern Nigeria (now Imo State) for secondary education.
  • Gained admission to the University of Lagos, graduating in 1968 with a B.Sc. in Accounting. He was the first graduate accountant employed into the Civil Service of old Rivers State that same year.

Career Highlights

  • Worked briefly with Customs and Excise Department, Lagos, and later with the Nigerian Railway Corporation, combining full‑time night duty with full‑time university studies — a feat that earned him commendation.
  • Joined the Rivers State Civil Service Commission in 1968, rising to Deputy Accountant General before retirement.
  • Served across multiple ministries and boards, including Health, Works, Information, House of Assembly, Agricultural Production and Marketing Corporation, and more.
  • Attended advanced professional courses, including a British Council‑sponsored Certificate in Finance and Accounting at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland.
  • Appointed Commissioner of Finance, Bayelsa State (2003–2007) under Governor Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, where he distinguished himself as a judicious and principled financial administrator.

  • A devoted Methodist, MMC was a choir member in his youth and later became a Diocesan Merit Award recipient of the Methodist Church of Nigeria.
  • Served as Financial Secretary of the Men’s Fellowship, Class Leader of Rueben Class, and Member of the Church Council at Wesley Methodist Church, Port Harcourt.
  • Socially active: member of Twon Youth Club, Port Harcourt Polo Club, Bayelsa Welfare Association, and held leadership roles in the Scouts Movement and Lions Club.

Family Life

  • Married Madam Isabella Thompson of Okrika, Rivers State, blessed with four children.
  • Though a polygamist, he was deeply committed to family welfare, education, and the progress of his relations.

  • Installed as Chief Igbodo II of Ada‑Ama on 23 July 2005, confirmed by King A.P. Diete‑Spiff on 4 February 2006.
  • Also installed as Chief Egbo of Otuogidi, Ogbia LGA, Bayelsa State.

MMC’s health declined in late 2007. He was flown to Christian Barnard Hospital, Cape Town, South Africa, where he passed on 29 November 2007 at 10:00 AM, aged 68 (not 79, based on birth year 1939). His final words sought forgiveness and reconciliation, reflecting his deep Christian faith.
