Early Life and Background

Navy Captain Walter Aye Feghabo-Amain (Rtd.) was born on December 10, 1957, in Nembe, into the revered Ogbari and Basuo war canoe houses. His father, Esan Feghabo, was a noble son of the soil, while his mother, Daukoru, was the first daughter of the renowned wrestler and fisherman, Owei-Ilagha.

He began his education at St. Luke’s School, Nembe, where he distinguished himself academically. Following the early loss of his father, he was raised by his uncle, Joseph Aye Ilagha, a disciplined schoolteacher who shaped his intellectual and moral foundation. Despite disruptions caused by the Nigerian Civil War, he remained steadfast in his pursuit of education across Onitsha and Port Harcourt.


Military Education and Global Training

His journey into military excellence began at the Nigerian Military School in 1971, graduating in 1975. He proceeded to the Nigerian Defence Academy, where he was commissioned in 1977.

Captain Feghabo’s professional training spanned multiple continents, including the Britannia Royal Naval College, INS Venduruthy in India, and the United States Naval War College. He also earned a Diploma in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University).

Distinguished Naval Career

A dynamic and highly skilled officer, he held several key appointments in the Nigerian Navy. He served aboard NNS Ruwan Yaro, NNS Erin-Omi, NNS Ambe, and NNS Damisa, rising to Executive Officer positions.

He later became Fleet Communications Officer (Eastern Fleet) and Chief Instructor at the Signal School, NNS Quorra, Lagos. His excellence and leadership earned him steady promotions, culminating in his rise to the rank of Navy Commander in 1996.


Military Administration and National Service

In a defining moment of national duty, his appointment was announced by Sani Abacha as the pioneer Military Administrator of Ebonyi State in 1996. During his tenure, he laid the administrative and developmental foundation of the state.

He later served as Military Administrator of Delta State (1998–1999) under Abdulsalami Abubakar, playing a key role in Nigeria’s transition to democratic governance. He was promoted to Captain in 1999 and retired honorably shortly after.


Traditional Leadership and Political Contributions

After his retirement, he remained active in public service, assuming the role of Head Chief of the Amain‑Kien‑Alagoa‑Koki war canoe houses of the Nembe Kingdom in 2007 thereabout and serving as Alternate Chairman of the Nembe Chiefs Council.

He also ventured into politics, contesting for governorship and later contributing to governance under Diepreye Alamieyeseigha and Henry Seriake Dickson in project monitoring and implementation roles.


Honours, Travels and Recognition

Captain Feghabo was widely travelled, visiting countries across Europe, Africa, and North America. He received several honours, including the Forces Service Star (FSS), Meritorious Service Star (MSS), and was a Justice of the Peace (JP).

He was also a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club in recognition of his community service.


Family and Personal Life

He was married to Mrs. Ebi Lilian Feghabo, who held the title Nnediohare of Ebonyi State.

He was a devoted father to a large and extended family, leaving behind numerous children who continue to uphold his legacy. Their lives remain a reflection of his enduring values, guidance, and influence.


Passing and Legacy

In early 2025, he fell ill and was hospitalized for an extended period. On October 19, 2025, he passed away at the age of 68.

Captain Walter Aye Feghabo-Amain (Rtd.) is remembered as a disciplined officer, visionary administrator, and committed patriot whose contributions to Nigeria’s military, governance, and community development remain indelible.

He was buried on the 25th of April, 2026.
