Soldier | Physician | Poet | Community Leader

Davidson Imimo David Otiotio was a man of many callings — a warrior who fought for Nigeria’s unity, a physician who healed countless lives, a poet who gave voice to his people’s struggles, and a beloved leader whose compassion and integrity left an indelible mark on Nembe and Bayelsa State.

Early Life and Military Service

Born in Nembe‑Bassambiri, Bayelsa State, Davidson’s life was shaped by courage from an early age. At just 16 years old, he joined the Nigerian Army during the Civil War (1968–1969), serving under Brigadier‑General Benjamin Adekunle, the “Black Scorpion.” He fought alongside heroes like Colonel David Akono and Navy Captain Ekeopre Beredugo, witnessing the liberation of Aba, Port Harcourt, and Imo. His bravery in battle forged the discipline and resilience that defined his later life.

Scholarship and Medicine

After the war, Davidson pursued education with the same zeal he had shown on the battlefield. He attended the Nigerian Military School and later studied medicine at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, while serving as an officer‑cadet at the Nigerian Defence Academy. Graduating in 1978, he became a medical doctor and embarked on a distinguished career in both military and civilian hospitals.

He rose to the position of Senior Medical Officer with the Rivers State Health Management Board, and later served as Chief Medical Officer, retiring in 2011 after decades of service. Even in retirement, he continued to practice medicine in local hospitals, ensuring his people had access to care.

The Poet’s Voice

Beyond medicine, Davidson was a gifted poet whose works appeared in the Mariner Journal and local newspapers. His poetry reflected the struggles of Nigerian society and the resilience of his people. His evocative piece The School Uniform captured the complexities of injustice and survival, blending imagery of everyday life with biblical and historical references. Through his words, he became not only a healer of bodies but also of minds and spirits.

Faith and Family

Davidson was a man of faith, deeply rooted in the Anglican Church, while also engaging with the Baptist community. Though a polygamist, he was devoted to his family, raising four children with wisdom and guidance. His spirituality was expressed through compassion, humility, and service to others.

Community Leadership and Legacy

Davidson’s contributions extended beyond medicine and literature. He played a vital role in the development of Bayelsa State’s healthcare system, strengthening institutions and mentoring younger professionals. His kindness, sense of justice, and willingness to serve made him a pillar of Nembe society.

He was remembered not only for his professional achievements but for his generosity, his integrity, and his ability to inspire others. His life was a tapestry of courage, intellect, and compassion — a rare blend of soldier’s discipline, physician’s care, and poet’s soul.

Final Days and Passing

In June 2020, Davidson fell ill and passed away on June 26, 2020, at Tobis Hospital, Yenagoa, aged 69. His death, though during the global COVID‑19 pandemic, was unrelated to the virus. He was laid to rest on September 12, 2020, in his hometown of Bassambiri‑Nembe, surrounded by family, friends, and admirers.

Eternal Legacy

Captain (Dr.) Davidson Imimo David Otiotio will forever be remembered as a hero, healer, poet, and leader. His life reminds us that true greatness lies not in titles or wealth, but in the courage to serve, the wisdom to heal, and the compassion to uplift others.

May his noble soul rest in eternal peace.
