Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Administrator, Medical Leader
Early Life and Birth
Late Dr. Lishman Lee Kosipre was born on October 16, 1956, at the Baptist Mission Hospital, Joinkrama, into a devout Christian family rooted in the Baptist faith.
He was the second child and second son of Late Chief Edward E. Kosipre of the Ojolubo Family in Kilama, Biseni, and Late Mrs. Rezanah Edward Kosipre (née Agbajah) of the Ikuludonu Family in Tein, Biseni, all in present-day Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, Nigeria.
His father, a dedicated educationist and Headmaster under the Baptist Mission, laid a strong foundation of discipline, faith, and academic excellence that would shape his life.
Childhood and Early Education
Dr. Kosipre’s early life was marked by frequent relocations due to his father’s postings as a Headmaster across Rivers State. He began his formal education in 1962 at Old Bakana Town, later attending:
- Baptist Day School, K-Dere, Gokana
- Baptist Day School, Buguma
- Baptist Day School, Aggrey Road, Port Harcourt
He completed his primary education in 1967, obtaining his First School Leaving Certificate.
The outbreak of the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970) forced a return to his ancestral home, where he developed resilience and practical life skills—learning fishing, canoe paddling, carving, and adapting to rural life.
Secondary and Advanced Education
After the war, he resumed his academic journey at Bishop Dimeari Grammar School (BDGS), Yenagoa (1970–1972), where he demonstrated brilliance and earned a government scholarship under Military Governor Alfred Diete-Spiff.
Due to the shortage of science teachers, he transferred to Baptist High School, Port Harcourt, where his exceptional academic performance earned him direct placement into a higher class. He graduated in 1974 with a Division One West African School Certificate, distinguishing himself as one of the brightest students of his time.
He proceeded to the College of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt for Advanced Level studies, obtaining outstanding results, including an Aggregate 18 in GCE A-Level (1977)—the second-best result in the state.
A Defining Turning Point: From Aviation to Medicine
Driven by ambition, Dr. Kosipre initially aspired to become a commercial pilot, securing admission into prestigious flying schools in Scotland, Oxford (UK), and Zaria, Nigeria.
However, destiny intervened.
Encouraged by his former principal and his father—who believed his intellectual capacity was better suited for medicine—he redirected his path. With dual scholarships from both the Federal Government and Rivers State Government, he embraced medicine.
Medical Education and Qualification
In October 1977, he gained admission into the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, where he trained rigorously and graduated in July 1982 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS).
