Early Life and Background

Brighten Sorgwe was born on October 2, 1944, into a devout Christian family in Yenagoa Local Government Area of present-day Bayelsa State. His father, Late Chief Johnson Sorgwe, hailed from Igbogene-Epie, while his mother, Late Madam Egbe Bunas (née), was from Onopa-Atissa.

From humble beginnings in the Niger Delta, Brighten would grow to become one of the most recognizable voices and personalities in Nigeria’s broadcasting landscape.


Education

Brighten Sorgwe began his formal education in Nigeria and later attended the United Christian Secondary School, Lagos, where he obtained his West African School Certificate (WASC/GCE) in 1966.

His passion for learning and self-development drove him to pursue multiple academic qualifications throughout his life. He trained professionally at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) Training School in Lagos, where he earned both Basic and Senior Announcers’ Certificates in 1980.

He later obtained:

  • National Diploma (ND) in Journalism – International Institute of Journalism (IIJ), Abuja (1998)
  • Higher Diploma (HD) – Federal University of Technology, Owerri (2002)
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration (PGDPA) – University of Calabar (2003)
  • Master of Public Administration (MPA) – University of Calabar (2004)

He also commenced a PhD in Public Administration at the University of Calabar but was unable to complete it due to health challenges.


Military Service and Early Career

In 1967, Brighten enlisted in the Nigerian Navy, marking the beginning of his professional journey. During his service, his exceptional communication skills quickly distinguished him, earning him placement in the Radio/Signals Department.

He served as both a communicator and instructor, undergoing extensive local and international training. His naval career saw him serve aboard warships across major locations including Lagos, Calabar, and Port Harcourt.

In 1978, driven by an unrelenting passion for broadcasting, he made the bold decision to resign from the Navy. His superiors initially resisted his resignation, even detaining him briefly, but he remained resolute in pursuing his calling.


Broadcasting Career

Brighten Sorgwe began his broadcasting career in 1978 at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Port Harcourt, where he worked as a newscaster and programme presenter.

That same year, he introduced his iconic music programme, Pop Joint, a Soul Train-inspired show that electrified the airwaves and marked the beginning of his rise to fame.

Following the transition of FRCN operations to Rivers State, he continued his career at Radio Rivers, adapting seamlessly to both shortwave and medium wave broadcasting. With the establishment of FM broadcasting in Port Harcourt in 1981, Brighten became one of the pioneering voices of the new era.

In 1999, after the creation of Bayelsa State, he was redeployed to Radio Bayelsa (Glory FM), where he served with distinction and eventually rose to become General Manager (2004–2007).


Signature Programmes and On-Air Persona

Brighten Sorgwe was a master of the microphone, known for his deep, commanding voice and electrifying presence. His programmes became household favourites across the Niger Delta and beyond.

These signature introductions and his charismatic delivery earned him several nicknames, including “King of Swing” and “FM Vocal Logo.”


Disc Jockey and Entertainment Influence

Beyond radio, Brighten was a celebrated Disc Jockey who dominated the entertainment scene in Port Harcourt and across the Niger Delta.

At parties and major events, he commanded the dance floor with unmatched skill and musical selection. His influence was so profound that many DJs sought to emulate his style, yet his originality and mastery remained unmatched.

Through his DJ career, he helped shape the entertainment culture of an era.


Media Administration and Public Service

Brighten Sorgwe was not only a broadcaster but also an accomplished media administrator.

As General Manager of Radio Bayelsa, he introduced reforms that improved programming quality, operational efficiency, and audience engagement, repositioning the station as a leading voice in the region.

In 2007, he was transferred to the Bayelsa State Ministry of Information, Culture, and Communication, where he served as:

  • Director of Publications
  • Head of Public Enlightenment

In these roles, he played a critical part in public communication, policy dissemination, and information management within the state.

Brighten Sorgwe was a devoted family man. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ebioboere Ogbise Sorgwe, and his children, including:

Death and Burial

Brighten Sorgwe passed away on June 5, 2022, after a brief illness, bringing to a close a remarkable life of service and excellence.

He was laid to rest on November 19, 2022, at his residence in Igbogene, Yenagoa, in a ceremony attended by family, friends, colleagues, and admirers from across Nigeria.


Legacy

Brighten Sorgwe remains one of the most iconic figures in the history of broadcasting in the Niger Delta.

His legacy is defined by:
