He received his secondary education at Bishop Dimieari Grammar School, Yenagoa, where he studied between 1960 and 1964 and graduated with the West African School Certificate (Division One).
In 1965, he enrolled at the University of Nigeria Nsukka to study Mechanical Engineering. However, his studies were interrupted by the Nigerian Civil War.
Determined to continue his academic pursuits, he transferred to Ahmadu Bello University, where he completed his Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering in 1970.
He further advanced his studies abroad, earning a Master of Science in Automotive Studies from Cranfield University, United Kingdom (1971–1972). His academic journey culminated with a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Tribology from the University of Wales, Swansea (1973–1975), establishing him as a specialist in one of the most advanced areas of mechanical engineering.
Career and Professional Achievements
Professor Odi-Owei began his professional career in 1970 as a Pupil Mechanical Engineer with the Ministry of Works and Transport in Port Harcourt. His academic career later flourished within the university system, where he rose steadily through the ranks.
He served in several key academic positions including Head of Department, Dean of Faculty, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, eventually becoming Vice-Chancellor of Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) from 1996 to 2000. Under his leadership, the university strengthened its academic programs and institutional governance.
In recognition of his distinguished contributions to engineering education and research, he was appointed Emeritus Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Rivers State University in 2015.
