Elder Samuel Iduabo Tarinyo was a distinguished educationist, disciplinarian, and community leader whose life reflected dedication to learning, service, and moral excellence. He was born on 4th November 1938 in Otuogidi Town, Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, into the family of Mr. Baralagha Tarinyo and Mrs. Eteinmunu Tarinyo, as the third of five children.

From a young age, he displayed an enduring passion for education, a calling that shaped his lifelong journey.


Education and Academic Pursuit

His early education began in 1947/1948 at St. John’s Anglican School, Otuogidi, followed by studies at several institutions including St. Peter’s Anglican School, Opume; St. Paul’s Anglican School, Otuokpoti; and St. Michael’s Anglican School, Oloibiri, where he earned his First School Leaving Certificate in 1958.

He proceeded to teacher training institutions in Oporoma, earning both his Preliminary Teacher’s Certificate (1959) and Elementary Training Certificate (1961–1962). His academic journey was briefly disrupted by the Nigerian Civil War (1967), but he returned to complete his Teacher’s Grade II Certificate in 1969 in Port Harcourt.

Driven by an insatiable thirst for knowledge, he further obtained:

  • NCE – Rivers State College of Education (1972–1975)
  • B.A. (History) – University of Lagos (1977–1980)
  • NYSC – Served in present-day Akwa Ibom State (1980–1981)

Career and Professional Impact

Elder Tarinyo began his teaching career in 1960, rising steadily through the ranks due to diligence, competence, and leadership.

He served in multiple capacities including Headmaster, Classroom Teacher, Vice Principal, and Principal across several institutions in Rivers and Bayelsa States. His postings included:

  • Mater Dei High School, Imiringi, where he taught future leaders such as Goodluck Ebele Jonathan
  • Government Teachers Training Colleges in Kolo and Rumuokwuta
  • Stella Maris College, Port Harcourt (Principal, 1988–1990)
  • Government Secondary School, Twon Brass (Principal, 1990)
  • Nembe National Grammar School (Vice Principal, 1991–1996)

He also served as a Course Tutor/Supervisor for the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI) and later rose to become Director of Supervision at the Bayelsa State Post Primary Schools Board, retiring honorably in 2000.

Post-retirement, his leadership continued as Chairman of Oloibiri Customary Court (2003–2008).


Family Life and Marriage

He married Roseline Itesobo Tarinyo (née Ikeni) on 17th February 1969, a union that blossomed into a partnership of shared educational pursuit and strong Christian values.

Their marriage endured for 56 years, blessed with children and grandchildren, and celebrated with a golden jubilee in February 2017.


Faith, Character, and Lifestyle

A devout Anglican, Elder Tarinyo was affectionately called “Atisa” (Teacher). He was known for his calm demeanor, deep scriptural insight, and commitment to shaping lives both academically and spiritually.

He was:

  • A man of peace and integrity
  • A gifted storyteller and mentor
  • A lover of music, nature, and intellectual discourse
  • A community builder whose home served as a hub for progress-driven dialogue

Final Days and Passing

In his later years, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, which gradually affected his health.

Despite this, he was lovingly cared for by his wife and children, who stood by him with unwavering devotion.

He passed away peacefully at home in the Opolo axis of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on 19th August 2023, at the age of 85, surrounded by his loved ones.

He was laid to rest on 15th December 2023 in Otuogidi, his beloved community.
